The Tailgate Bar
Is there a tailgate bar that fits in a minivan?
Yes. The Tailgate Bar is a full-size, solid wood L-shaped bar that breaks down into 16 pieces: two bar tops, three front panels, six shelves and the legs. Everything fits in the back of a minivan, and it was designed that way from day one.
How long does a portable tailgate bar take to set up?
About 5 to 10 minutes with one or two people. The only tools are a mallet and a Phillips screwdriver. The shelves latch in with Knapp connectors, and the bar tops lock together with cam locks.
How big is the Tailgate Bar?
The L-shaped top is 26 inches wide, about 6½ feet on the long side and 4 feet on the short side, with six built-in shelves underneath. It's a real bar, not a folding table.
How much does a custom wooden tailgate bar cost?
The Simple (one hardwood species) starts at $4,800. The Two-Tone (two contrasting woods with laminated striped legs) starts at $5,500. The Signature (black walnut, maple and red grandis with custom inlays) starts at $8,000. Final pricing depends on the woods and design details you choose.
What wood is the Tailgate Bar made from?
Any hardwood you like. Black walnut is our favorite, and we also build in maple, oak, cherry and more. The legs are 4-by-4 inches, laminated from five layers of wood to show off the striping. Every bar is finished with Rubio Monocoat hard wax oil.
Where did the Tailgate Bar come from?
We built the first one in August 2021 for our own Notre Dame tailgates on the Burke South lot, because we couldn't find a decent bar that would fold down into a minivan. People asked where to get one at every game, so we started Coldwater Bay Workshop.
Ordering and Delivery
How do I order a Tailgate Bar?
Fill out our reserve form, or book a $25 design consult. We'll reach out within a day to settle your style, woods and details, then send your quote and a $1,500 deposit invoice to lock in your build. The deposit and the consult fee are both credited to your final price.
How long does it take to build?
About 8 weeks from finalized design to delivery.
Do you ship or deliver?
Yes, we deliver anywhere in the US. For international orders, contact us and we'll work out shipping options together.
Is my deposit refundable?
Your deposit is refundable until we purchase the wood for your build. The deposit covers that initial wood purchase.
Can I make changes after the design is finalized?
Yes. Each change may carry an added cost, which we'll discuss with you when you request it.
Care and Custom Furniture
How do I care for a wooden tailgate bar?
Wipe it down and keep it dry. Rubio Monocoat maintenance oil keeps the finish healthy. Our own Tailgate Bar gets a light sanding and a fresh coat every off season, and it's still going strong year after year.
